Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Mid Rogue Fire District?

Mid Rogue Fire District is a newly formed rural fire protection district in Josephine County, Oregon. Our purpose is to ensure long-term, reliable fire protection and emergency response for residents in the district.

2. Do we have fire protection right now?

Yes. Through a service agreement with Rural Metro Fire Department of Josephine County, residents of the district are covered for all-hazard emergency services including fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and other emergency response. Since the district does not collect taxes to fund these services, it is essential that residents maintain their subscription with Rural Metro Fire Department, Inc. The agreement between the district and Rural Metro allows them to continue operating under their subscription-based service model, ensuring uninterrupted protection for our community.

3. Why do I still need a Rural Metro subscription if we now have a fire district?

The Mid Rogue Fire District does not collect taxes to pay for fire and emergency services. Instead, the district has a service agreement with Rural Metro Fire Department, Inc. that allows them to continue providing coverage within our boundaries. Rural Metro operates under a subscription-based model, which means residents must maintain their subscription for fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and other emergency response. If you do not have an active subscription, you may still receive service, but you will be billed directly for the full cost of the response.

4. Why was the fire district created?

The district was created to give our community a local, accountable governing body (our elected Board of Directors) to oversee fire protection services and to work toward building a sustainable, community-based fire district for the future.

5. Does Mid Rogue Fire District have its own fire trucks and stations?

Not yet. At this stage, we do not own infrastructure or equipment. Rural Metro Fire provides the personnel, apparatus, and stations needed to serve the community under our service agreement.

6. How is the district funded?

Currently, the district does not have a permanent tax base. Our Board of Directors is working on long-term funding strategies, which will eventually be presented to voters for approval.

7. What does the Board of Directors do?

The district is governed by a five-member elected Board of Directors. Their responsibilities include:

  • Establishing policies and procedures.
  • Managing the district’s service agreement.
  • Planning for future funding and infrastructure.
  • Ensuring transparency and accountability to the community.

8. How can I participate in district meetings?

Board meetings are open to the public in accordance with Oregon public meeting laws. Notices, agendas, and minutes will be posted on our website and social media. Residents are encouraged to attend, provide input, and stay informed.

9. What happens if there’s an emergency?

In the event of an emergency, always dial 911. Dispatch will send the appropriate response, which in our area is Rural Metro Fire and other local mutual-aid partners.

10. How will I know if there’s a ballot measure for funding?

If the Board decides to move forward with a tax base or levy, information will be posted on the district’s website, social media, and in official public notices. We will also host community meetings to explain the proposal and answer questions.

11. How can I get involved?

Residents can:

  • Attend and participate in board meetings.
  • Volunteer for committees or advisory groups when available.
  • Share input on district planning.
  • Support community fire safety efforts (such as defensible space and prevention).
